I remastered Words of Clay, a short I co-directed a few years ago
To start the year, I've finished a project that's been close to my heart for a while: re-releasing Word of Clay, a short film I co-directed with Charline S. Cabaret, which was shot in late 2019 and completed during the pandemic.
Back then, we couldn't manage to screen it publicly: the premiere was online. We sent the movie to a bunch of festivals but it was never selected. After that, I started to work a lot as camera assistant, Charline moved... Unwittingly, a year's worth of preparation and work faded away. However, from building sets to designing numerous costumes, including a complex shot and endless finishing touches... the whole thing was quite an adventure!
Now that I have some perspective, I can see how important this work has been, personally and professionally. While I still feel proud and fond of it, I also see the mistakes we made. At the end of the day, there isn't a better school than simply directing. Even though a first film will be pretty ignored, full of errors, it will always be the first. That's not nothing. It's too bad that such projects end up, forgotten, inside a dusty hard disk after all the effort they required.
Nonetheless, like my documentary, I must say that the passing time made me regret the final result a bit. I've been thinking about it for some time and now, it's done! I've color graded the movie again, from scratch, with my current knowledge. I wanted to show a good final version. Better late than never, right? But before that, let me tell you the story...
